What Is Generic Digiter (Digoxin) Used For?
Generic Digiter (Digoxin) helps the heart to beat more strongly and regularly.
Generic Digiter (Digoxin) is used to treat conditions such as congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation/ atrial flutter (types of fast heartbeats).
Generic Digiter (Digoxin) may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
Generic Digiter (Digoxin) Fcts
Active Igredients: Digoxin
Inactive Ingredients: corn starch, croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, pregela-tinized starch, lactose monohydrate and anhydrous lactose, silicon dioxide and stearic acid.
Generic Digiter (Digoxin)--0.25 mg. white, round, scored tablets.
Each tablet contains the labeled amount of digoxin USP.
Class and Mechanism:
Generic Digiter (Digoxin) belongs to a class of drugs known as digitalis glycosides. It improves the strength and efficiency of your heart, which leads to better circulation of blood and reduction of the uncomfortable swelling that is common in people with congestive heart failure.
Generic Digiter (Digoxin) Storage
Store this medicine at room temperature. Keep the container tightly closed. Protect it from heat, high humidity, and bright light.
How to take Generic Digiter (Digoxin)?
Take this medicine regularly and exactly as your health care provider prescribes, even if you feel better. Do not take more or less than prescribed. Do not stop taking this medicine without your health care provider's approval. You may take this medicine with or without food. Taking it with meals may lessen the chance the drug will upset your stomach.
Your doctor will determine your dosage based on several factors:
- the disease being treated;
- your body weight;
- your kidney function;
- your age
- other diseases you have or drugs you are taking.
If you are receiving Generic Digiter (Digoxin) for the first time, you may be rapidly "digitalized" (a larger first dose may be taken, followed by smaller maintenance doses), or gradually "digitalized" (maintenance doses only), depending on your doctor's recommendation.
If OVERDOSE is suspected call your doctor or local emergency immediately.
Symptoms of Generic Digiter (Digoxin) overdose include:
Abdominal pain, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, loss of appetite, nausea, very slow pulse, vomiting
What to do if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose up to 12 hours late. If more than 12 hours have passed, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose.
!!! Do Not take a double dose of this medication.
If you are not sure of what to do if you miss a dose, or if you miss more than one dose, contact your health care provider.
Who should not take Generic Digiter (Digoxin)?
There are no restrictions on food, beverages, or activity while taking Generic Digiter (Digoxin) unless otherwise directed by your doctor. But, before taking this medicine, tell your health care provider if you have ever had:
- an allergic reaction to any medicine
- problems with calcium, potassium, or magnesium levels in your blood
- kidney disease
- thyroid problems.
Check your pulse regularly, and contact your health care provider right away if it gets slower than 60 beats per minute (bpm) or faster than 100 bpm. You may also need to check your blood pressure and weight regularly.
You will need to have blood tests regularly to see how this medicine affects you. Keep all appointments for these tests. If you need emergency care, surgery, or dental work, tell the health care provider or dentist you are taking this medicine. Talk with your health care provider about whether you should take potassium or magnesium supplements.
What side effects may occur?
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Generic Digiter (Digoxin) and seek medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:
- an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
- a severe headache, fainting, or extreme drowsiness or dizziness;
- irregular heartbeats;
- slow heartbeats (fewer than 60 beats per minute);
- abnormally fast heartbeats;
- vision changes (e.g., yellow-green or blurred vision);
- hallucinations; or
- abnormal or psychotic behavior.
If you experience any of the following less serious side effects, continue to take Generic Digiter (Digoxin) and talk to your doctor if you experience:
- decreased appetite and diarrhea;
- unusual tiredness or weakness;
- depression;
- nausea or vomiting;
- drowsiness or dizziness;
- decreased sex drive; or
- enlarged breasts in males.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
Generic Digiter Drug Interactions:
Generic Digiter (Digoxin) has potentially dangerous interaction with verapamil, amiodarone and erythromycin. In an overdose, the usual supportive measures are needed. Generic Digiter (Digoxin) cannot be removed by hemodialysis. Before taking Generic Digiter (Digoxin), tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- another medication for irregular heartbeats, such as quinidine (Quinidex, Quinora, Cardioquin, others), amiodarone (Cordarone), or propafenone (Rythmol);
- an antacid or laxative that contains aluminum, magnesium, or kaolin-pectin such as Maalox, Rolaids, Mylanta, Milk of Magnesia, and others;
- a beta-blocker such as atenolol (Tenormin), propranolol (Inderal), acebutolol (Sectral), metoprolol (Lopressor), carteolol (Cartrol), labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate), or nadolol (Corgard);
- a calcium channel blocker such as diltiazem (Cardizem, Dilacor XR, Tiazac), amlodipine (Norvasc), felodipine (Plendil), nifedipine (Procardia, Adalat), verapamil (Verelan, Calan, Isoptin, Covera-HS), and others;
- a cancer chemotherapy drug;
- a diuretic (water pill) such as hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, HydroDiuril, others), chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Hygroton, Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), torsemide (Demadex), bumetanide (Bumex), ethacrynic acid (Edecrin), triamterene (Dyrenium, Maxzide, Dyazide), amiloride (Midamor), spironolactone (Aldactone), eplerenone (Inspra), and others;
- a steroid medicine such as prednisone (Deltasone), methylprednisolone (Medrol, others), prednisolone (Prelone, Pediapred, others), dexamethasone (Decadron), and others;
- a thyroid medication;
- alprazolam (Xanax);
- amphotericin B (Fungizone);
- cholestyramine (Questran, Prevalite) or colestipol (Colestid);
- erythromycin (E.E.S., E-Mycin, Eryc, Ery-Tab, PCE, others) or clarithromycin (Biaxin);
- indomethacin (Indocin);
- itraconazole (Sporanox);
- metoclopramide (Reglan);
- rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane);
- sulfasalazine (Azulfidine); or
- tetracycline (Broadspec, Emtet, Panmycin, Sumycin, Tetracap, others).
You may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring if you are taking any of the medicines listed above.
