What is Generic Vasotec (Enalapril)?
Generic Vasotec (Enalapril) is a drug that is used for treating high blood pressure. It is in a class of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.
ACE is an enzyme in the body that causes the formation of angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes the arteries in the body to narrow, thereby elevating blood pressure.
What is Generic Vasotec (Enalapril) used for?
Hypertension:
Generic Vasotec (Enalapril) is indicated for the treatment of hypertension. Generic Vasotec (Enalapril) is effective alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents, especially thiazide-type diuretics. The blood pressure lowering effects of Enalapril and thiazides are approximately additive.
Heart Failure
Generic Vasotec (Enalapril) is indicated for the treatment of symptomatic congestive heart failure, usually in combination with diuretics and digitalis. In these patients Generic Vasotec (Enalapril) improves symptoms, increases survival, and decreases the frequency of hospitalization.
Generic Vasotec (Enalapril) is also sometimes used to treat kidney disease related to diabetes. Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this medication for your condition. This medication may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
Generic Vasotec (Enalapril) Facts
Active ingredient: enalapril maleate
Other Ingredients: lactose, magnesium stearate, starch, and other ingredients. The 2.5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg tablets also contain iron oxides.
Class and mechanism: Generic Vasotec (Enalapril) is a class of drugs called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. ACE is an enzyme in the body that causes the formation of angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes the arteries in the body to narrow, thereby elevating blood pressure. ACE inhibitors, such as Generic Vasotec (Enalapril), lower blood pressure by preventing the formation of angiotensin II thereby relaxing the arteries. ACE inhibitors also improve the effectiveness of the heart in patients with heart failure by reducing the blood pressure that the heart must maintain.

What side effects may occur?
Generic Vasotec (Enalapril) is generally well tolerated, and side effects usually are mild and transient. A dry, persistent cough has been reported with the use of ACE inhibitors. Coughing resolves after discontinuing the medication.
